United States Army Staff Sergeant Travis Mills of the 82nd Airborne, on his third tour of duty in Afghanistan, was critically injured on April 10 by an IED (improvised explosive device) while on patrol, losing portions of both legs and both arms. He is only the fourth quadruple amputee, from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, to survive his injuries.

On Saturday, there will be an event to raise money for his family.

The “Miles for Mills” motorcycle ride will take place at 10 a.m. at Strokers Dallas, 9304 Harry Hines Blvd. in Dallas and will conclude at American Legion Post 88 in Lake Dallas, 105 Gotcher Ave. Check-in starts at 9 a.m. There is a $20 suggested donation per bike.

U.S. Congressman Sam Johnson will begin the ride with a single gun shot.

Strokers Dallas will be opening up before 8 a.m. with coffee and donuts being provided.

The ride will be escorted by the Dallas Police Department. Leading the ride will be Rick Turner, formerly of the 82nd Airborne, with Mandy Bishop, Travis’ cousin as his passenger, and Craig Buck, Travis’ father-in-law with his passenger being Kelsey Mills, Travis’ wife.

The first six bikes beginning with Rick and Craig will be flying the 82nd Airborne flag, the American flag, the Texas Flags, POW flag, Navy flag, Patriot Guard flag and Combat Vet flag.

On the ride, right past Interstate 635, there will be an air escort as well. A UH1 (also known as a Huey) will be flying along and saluting you as you ride into Lake Dallas.
The Flower Mound and Lewisville fire departments will each have a ladder truck on the overpass in Lake Dallas, and a large American Flag will be draped between the two trucks for the riders to ride under.

Approximately eight different police department will have service vehicles lining the road as the riders pass an exact replica of the Liberty Bell, surrounded by the Sons of the Civil War group, ringing as they pass. The Firefighter Pipes, Drum & Honor Guard Symposium will also be present to welcome the riders in.

There will be other opportunities to support the effort at American Legion, including a dart tournament, a poker tournament, a silent auction, a 50/50 raffle and food sponsored by Texas Roadhouse. Those events begin at noon.

Entertainment will be provided from 1-7 p.m. Starting off is Jerry Smith, acoustic entertainment from 1-3 p.m., and from 3-5 p.m., Texas Country band Saints Eleven will be playing. Johnny B and the Doo Wops will finish off the day from 5-7 p.m.

Victory Motorcycles in, Harleys out at Windsor Police

In December of last year, the Windsor Police Service became the first police department in Canada to purchase a fleet of Victory Motorcycles.
The department is changing its fleet of bikes from Harley-Davidson to Victory. It now owns six of each brand.

The decision irks the staff at local Harley-Davidson dealer Thunder Road Harley-Davidson.
Owner Chris O'Neil and general manager Robert Reeb each said the Harley-Davidson never got a chance to bid on the contract. They claim the Windsor Police Service never tendered out the contract to supply the bikes.

However, there was a public request for tender the local dealership wasn't aware of. Windsor Police director of planning and physical resources, Barry Horrobin, said it was done through the police cooperative purchasing group, a consortium of Ontario police departments created to obtain cheaper pricing by buying in bulk.

In this case, Waterloo Regional Police was also interested in new bikes.
"We took advantage of their competitive process," Horrobin said.
Horrobin "guaranteed" that Harley-Davidson Canada bid on the contract, but in the end, lost out.

"The manufacturer called the shot. Their company had every chance to bid on it and did," Horrobin said of Thunder Road's supplier.

A call to Harley-Davidson Canada wasn't immediately returned.
Windsor Police spokesperson Sgt. Brett Corey said that, in the end, the decision to switch was primarily a financial one.

The department purchased six bikes last year. Each cost nearly $7,000 less than Harley-Davidson ones, according to Corey.

O'Neil said Harley-Davidson supplied bikes through his dealership to the Windsor Police Service in the past, at a cost of approximately $16,000 each. He found it hard to believe a bike could be provided to the department for $9,000, which would be the approximate cost based on the savings Corey claimed.

Former fleet manager Bill Hunt and former Windsor Police Chief Gary Smith signed off on the new deal. Both have since retired.

The two came to the decision after a pair of officers traveled to Victory headquarters in Tuscon, Ariz., where the two officer test drove the bikes.

Mechanics from Victory will train mechanics employed by the City of Windsor to service the bikes.   "We don't have to contract out the service," Corey said. "It will be a significant cost reduction."

Rick Fairless’ “Natasha” (IronWorks Magazine)

Posted on IronWorks Website - 17 JUL 2012 BY SNAKEBIT SAM IN BLOG, PERSONALITY

Everyone in the motorcycle industry knows that Rick Fairless has a certain flair about him and that he often projects that into his custom bikes. With his trademark tie dyed shirts people think he’s lost in the ‘60s and his newest project might just exemplify that, but with a modern twist. Back in the ’60s ‘Rocky and Bullwinkle‘ was one of the hottest Looney Tunes cartoons going and the hottest babe in the show was Boris Badinoff’s partner in crime, Natasha. These days Victory is one of the hottest selling bikes going so naturally Rick was inspired to trick out a Victory using the “Way Back Machine” and his tie dye paint gun to pay homage to the Looney Tunes cartoons.

What came out is “Natasha”, an eye grabbing flashback to when cartoons (and life) were more simple and just plain fun. On the other hand the platform “Natasha” is built from is one of the most modernistic motorcycles in the world. When you see “Natasha” you’ll marvel at the intricate details and maybe reminisce about Saturday mornings way back when that were spent on the living room floor in front of the TV. If you want to get a good look at “Natasha” check out the September issue of IronWorks Magazine. “Natasha” not only graces the cover, there’s a feature story about her inside.

Now, maybe some of you can settle a raging debate going on in the IW Editorial offices. Certain people claim that the character’s name in the cartoon was Natasha Femme Fatale, while I say her name was Natasha Nogoodski. Who’s right? No matter, here’s a sneak peak teaser of “Natasha” and the September IW cover. To see more of “Natasha” get your hands on the September 2012 issue of IronWorks.

RF CUSTOM PARTS FOR VICTORY MOTORCYCLES

Here we now go, down a road that I have long wanted to travel. We are now making custom parts for Victory & Harley Davidson motorcycles. In this article I am going to talk about Custom Parts we are doing for Victory Motorcycles. This is a new venture I started last year & our RF Custom Parts are in production now & we are selling them all over the country.  I call my new company, “RF Custom Parts”.  RF is my initials, don’t ya know! Our tag line is “Made in Texas by Rednecks”, I use that because people all over the country think that we are all Rednecks down here in Texas…yeah, that’s pretty accurate.  Ok, Victory Motorcycles are here & they have been for 15 years now.  We are a Victory dealer & I am a Victory rider & I saw a big need to supply Victory riders some cool parts.  Here are a few of the parts we now offer for Victory Motorcycles: Floorboards, Footboards, Foot Pegs & Shifter Pegs, Derby & Points Covers, Belt Drive Covers, Reservoir Covers, Lowering Kits, Cam Bolt Covers, Handle Bars, Master Cylinder Reservoir Covers, Front Axle Covers, Body Panels, Cross Over Heat Shields, Fork Brace, Wheels, Fender Bumpers & much more.  I have a great team headed up by Dylan Hoey helping me in this venture.  We have about a Zillion parts in development now & many more in my ugly head that’s coming soon.  The good thing about buying from me is that you know who I am, you know where I am & you know that I will be here until the cows come home (that’s a Texas saying for forever!).  I’m here to provide y’all with the finest motorcycle parts/service in the industry.  Why would you buy parts from some online company that you’ve never heard of or that’s only been in business for a few years?  Those cats could be gone tomorrow.  To those online companies motorcycles are a sideline. MOTORCYCLES ARE MY LIFE! I will personally stand behind every part we sell or service we provide.  Please check out my website www.strokersdallas.com & you’ll see RF Custom Victory Parts under the PARTS label.  Also, we can do anything one off custom for your Victory.  I have the best dang Victory technicians in the country.  Check my parts out & let me know what you think.  You can order online or you can call me, Dylan or my parts staff to order these parts.  My email is rick@strokersdallas.com & Dylan’s is dylan@strokersdallas.com.  Our phone number is 214.357.0707 & we are open 8 days a week from 9am to 7pm EVERY DAY!

Thanks, Y’all!
